The high school boys’ track team manhandled Coyle and Cassidy on a cold, wind-driven rainy miserable day misnamed “spring” at the Vineyard oval, Tuesday. Paced by Tyler Araujo’s toss, the Islanders swept the throws: shot put (42’2″) and discus. Joe Turney won the javelin competition.
Rafael Maciel who was first over the high hurdles in 17.5, won the triple jump at 40’3″, and was second in the long jump,
Others winning their events included Anthony Piland, 200m, Randall Jette, 100m, long jump, high jump. Sam Oslyn won the low hurdles.
Coyle won both of the relays. The final count was Martha’s Vineyard 94, Coyle & Cassidy 41.
Girls outpaced by Coyle & Cassidy
The visiting female Warriors won the girls’ meet, 80-54 despite Maddie Penicaude’s heroics with a state-meet-qualifying triple jump of 31’11″ and first place finish in the 200m, a second in the 400m and a second place finish in the long jump, good enough to qualify for the states in that event, too.
To no one’s surprise, Maggie Riseborough won the shot put at 35’3.5″ and led a sweep with the discus.
The MV girls were even with Coyle in the field events scoring but the visitors ran away on the track.
Schivonne Schofield won at 2 miles.
The teams are at Somerset, Tuesday and host Blue Hills on Thursday, May 19.
