Up-Island shopping

Down Island (Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, and Vineyard Haven) has not cornered the market for on-Island shopping. Menemsha, Aquinnah, and Chilmark also have some unique, fulfilling shopping options.

Take a trip to Menemsha for some creative and exclusive finds. Menemsha Blues has a store filled with their classic Blueswear. Whether you want a tie to impress your favorite woman or a pair of Lahina shorts to match your new bikini top, here is where you can get it. Next door at Pandora’s Box, women will find this refreshing store filled with current fashions, jewelry, swimsuits, and accessories. Make sure to plan some extra time for the next shopping opportunity, Over South Antiques. Here you can relax and enjoy a variety of finds, which is always changing, so if you find a special something, don’t let go.

Just down the way on Basin Road you will run into the eclectic Chilmark Chandlery where their welcome sign, “New, used and well used gear & hardware” says it all. You would be hard pressed not to find what fishing gear you require plus some other must-have nuggets. Next door at The Copperworks of Martha’s Vineyard, owner and artist Scott McDowell has been very busy. He has started a new line of wall hangings in the shape of a sperm whale, which has been flying out of the store. His experience as a silversmith shows in his very popular silver bracelets while his well-known, handmade, aquatic inspired wall hangings, chandeliers, and lights fill the shop until they make their way to their new homes. Also accompanying Mr. McDowell’s artwork are some pieces from local artists. On the walls you will find selections from such artists as Bob Fitzgerald, Allen Whiting, and Marjorie Mason. Don West’s woodwork is an exceptional find, especially his Mackerel, which is carved and painted from a lobster buoy.

As if all these shops weren’t enough of a reason to head to Menemsha, we have two more for you. Beetlebung Dry Goods, located adjacent to Menemsha Café, has their newest selections of comfortable apparel for the whole family. You might want to think twice if you are not the proud owner of one of their more unique pieces, the Rorschach Lobster, which can be found on tee shirts, sweatshirts, hats, long-sleeved shirts ,and even a beach towel. Across the street, next to The Bite, is one of the Island’s quaintest retail opportunities, The Harbor Craft Shop.

Heading to Aquinnah to see the cliffs at Gay Head? Make sure to bring your wallet as you may be enamored with the colorful shops that adorn the walk from your car to the viewing area. Who can resist the Native American crafts and souvenirs, along with all the art, clothing, jewelry and yard ornamentations? This year Hatmarcha Gifts, How-Wass-Wee Trading Post, On the Cliffs, and Stony Creek Gifts have outdone themselves in their selections. On your way home, it is always recommended to stop at Allen Farm Sheep & Wool Company at 421 South Road in Chilmark. Here you will find a gift shop teeming with Island-grown wool products from sweaters to throws and everything in between. You may also buy some of their very own lamb products, from chops to roasts. What’s better than that?
