Well, we have definitely headed into the weather that requires a fall sweater or jacket on hand to chase the chill away. Luckily, most of our Island stores have planned accordingly and have some of the newest fall fashions in sweaters and lightweight jackets available for you.

Edgartown Clothing is a bevy of fall activity with a 30-to-50-percent-off sale on current stock, which includes many colorful sweaters, though the newly arrived fall line is as priced. According to owner Susan Trachik, “This year’s fall/winter sweater trends are anything with a chunky knit, from sweater ponchos, with and without defined sleeves, to big knit sweaters — think the cream colored sweaters with scenes such as deer knitted into them. These types of sweaters are great for the Martha’s Vineyard winters as they make you feel comfy and cozy. Another hot trend is fur, mostly rabbit, knitted into the sweater, mostly in vests, which makes it lighter as there is no pelt.” Ms. Trachik will be carrying all these new trends in her store, along with the well-known lines from QI and 525 America. She also has a full line of accessories, including some unique hats and mittens, to help complete your look. Stop in at 11 South Summer Street to peruse their selection.

Across the street at 20 South Summer Street is Very Vineyard, which is carrying a wonderful selection of lightweight jackets. Your choices range from the brands of Eucalyptus and CMC to the reversible jacket by Provence D’Amour.

Katydid, at 38 Main Street, has an enormous selection of sweaters in a wide array of styles, brands, and textures. The Relais brand is represented with their acrylic/wool-blended cardigans that are long and chunky, in natural colors. Cashmere can be had in both pastel and neutral tones from the well-known lines of Kinross and White + Warren. If cable knit sweaters made with 100 percent cotton are your choice, then you are in luck as there is a variety available from the Splendor! line. To finish your cold busting outfit, make sure to add in a colorful matching scarf from their wide collection.

Around the corner at 27 North Water Street (and also in Post Office Square in Oak Bluffs) is Island Outfitters, which is well known for their lines of Vera Bradley, Bench, and The North Face. We must now add in Pink Pineapple, as here is the Mecca for those who want to “wrap themselves in luxury,” according to the Pink website. At Island Outfitters, you will find the full line of Pink Pineapple cashmere sweaters, ranging from the long, lightweight cashmere wrap to the shorter pullover, and all are included in their buy-one-get-one-50-percent-off sale. The store also happens to be an exclusive U.S. Holebrook Sweden retailer, which means men have access to that much desired classic windproof sweater line in nautical colors and styles. Hurry to get your favorite sweater before it is gone.

Just down the way on Kelly Street (and on Main Street, Vineyard Haven) is Bryn Walker, which is filled with their signature flowy designs that are just right for any shape or size. The colors are as vast as the styles, with their brand consisting of 100 percent cotton sweaters with cowl necks and oversized sweaters by Pacific Cotton. They also have a rainbow selection of shorter, turtle neck, cable knitted sweaters and a large array of lightweight jackets/shirts that are perfect on their own or as part of a layered look. They have outdone themselves with many examples of a complete look that includes jewelry and bags; so head in to have your fall look updated.

On Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs, you will find a wonderful selection of various styled sweaters and jackets at both Laughing Bear and Basics Clothing. Laughing Bear, a well-known women’s clothing shop, carries a selection for all sizes and ages. Some of the well-known brands that you will find there are Italca, Willow, Morocco, and Avalon. Within these brands you will find fibers such as cotton, wool blends, and rayon/cotton blends, just to name a few, and many of this year’s popular colors: rich jewel tones, warming reds, Hershey brown, and silvery gray.

Basics carries several great adult lines for ladies including Alps, Columbia that includes the full-zip option, and the affordable Derek Hart sweaters with big bell sleeves. Men can find warmth with a few different styles of Columbia that also includes the full zip option with mock neck and a lining, but hurry, as these go quickly ever year, along with the Carhartt lined sweatshirts. Kids have a full line of OshKosh to choose from, along with the girl’s line of Roxy and the boy’s line of Quicksilver.
