Tisbury Senior Center hosts scam discussion by Sergeant Silvia

Tisbury police sergeant Rodney Silvia will lead a group discussion about common telephone and Internet scams at the Tisbury Senior Center at 1 pm on Monday, April 30.

Sergeant Silvia drops by the Tisbury Senior Center three days a week to represent the police department and answer any questions that seniors might have. He said that Tisbury Council on Aging director Joyce Stiles asked him about making a presentation about scams in light of recent reports of scams that involved people in the Island community.

In March, for example, a 75-year-old Vineyard Haven grandmother was defrauded of $4,600 in a telephone scam. The caller pretended to be her grandson and asked her to send money because he had been arrested and jailed.

Pre-registration is required to attend the discussion session, which is open to 30 people. Sergeant Silvia said he plans to use a question and answer format with the group. Call 508-696-4205 by 4:30 pm on Friday, April 27, to sign up.
