To the Editor:

What a lovely way to start the holiday season and welcome people to the idyllic Island of Martha’s Vineyard. A living color photograph of a vacant-eyed, neck-outstretched dead deer as a front page picture of the December 4 issue surely takes the cake — and I don’t mean a Christmas cake or a potato latke. What on earth were you thinking?

Is this the appearance we want to offer people? No more gingerbread houses, quaint villages, and rich Indian heritage, nope, dead deer in winter and mutilated sharks in the summer — and you’ve still got spring and fall, boys and girls. What shall it be? Eviscerated Easter bunnies and trampled Turkeys?

Surely you’ll think of something, but maybe you’ll think twice before you print it. Warm and fuzzy might not be front page news, but neither is a fresh carcass. There is a middle road, especially here.

For economic reasons if nothing else — and believe me dear news-people, there is a whole lot of else for you to choose from — please choose wisely and kindly.
