Each year, Island Grown Schools (IGS) does a unit on garden poetry with second graders at the Tisbury School. Clair Lafave, the IGS coordinator for the Tisbury School, recently submitted works from this spring.

“This year,” she wrote, “Mrs. Moore’s second grade class wrote a poem as a group, posted below (it’s so sweet). Both second grade classes (Kim Moore and Alison Smith) prepared the soil and planted a salad garden of lettuce, kale, chard, radishes, peas, and carrots, and we are going to harvest our first salad next week. This poem was written just after planting.

Being in the Garden

Freya gets wet from the sprinkling watering can

“It felt nice and fresh”

We planted peas and carrot seeds

The peas were lemon green and wet

The carrots were really small

And when they grow they’ll help our eyes

The garden helps us feel calm

And proud in our achievement
