Wendy Taucher Dance Opera Theater returns next weekend with “Impresario Now!” opening on July 31 and continuing through August 2. Billed as “90% Theater, 90% Musicale, Very Mozart Most of the Time,” the 70-minute comic opera in English and Italian makes its way to Featherstone for three nights of performances.
On opening night, Friday, July 31, the evening will honor Judy Belushi Pisano, who will receive the fourth annual Inspiration Award, with Jenny and Jim Belushi as celebration chairs. The Inspiration Award, presented by Wendy Taucher Dance Opera Theater, celebrates a Martha’s Vineyard leader who has maintained extraordinary commitment to Island arts and artists. The event begins at 5 pm, and will include appetizers, award ceremony, opera performance, supper and rock ’n’ roll dance party. Tickets range from $150 to $500, and are available at WendyTaucherDanceOperaTheater.com.
“Impresario Now!” continues at Featherstone on Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2, at 7 pm. Tickets are $25 to $100 for the opera performance, and are also available at WendyTaucherDanceOperaTheater.com.
Described as a full-tilt, cheeky collision of “The Producers” and “A Chorus Line,” the show also features beloved Italian oldies from “Figaro,” “Don G” and “Cosi” by that hitmeister of the 1780s Top 40 charts, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
According to a press release, audience members will enjoy a very now version of Mozart’s comic singspiel “Der Schauspieldirektor” with new fashionista costumes, dueling sopranos, battling baritones, a libidinous backer, and one very broke producer. The same old story, brand new.
Characters include Vinnie Birdwhistle: Heartbroken Tenor; sopranos Isolde Goldentrill and Swanhilda Silverspiel — one on the way up, one on the way out; Drusilla Kronensprech: A Mezzo with a Method; as well as Donaldo Largesse Angelgelt, Swifty Frank and his Faithless Companion Buddenbrooks Buff, Frederico Goldentrill: Barihunk Trouble Incarnate, and Tristana Straight.
Wendy Taucher Dance Opera Theater (WT DOT) is a New York City production company presenting original works by Wendy Taucher and other artists. Building on Wendy’s lifelong eclectic professional career as a choreographer, director, and author, WT DOT is a multifaceted company that produces dance, opera, and theater. WT DOT performs regularly in New York City and on tour, and is in residence summers on Martha’s Vineyard. Performers for this production hail from recent engagements at the Metropolitan Opera, Broadway, theNew York City Ballet, Royal Dutch Opera, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall. Wendy serves as director/choreographer and co-author for this production. She is joined by John Greer, longtime director of opera at New England Conservatory of Music.
The design team behind the performance consists of Arthur Oliver and local designer Stina Sayre, who served as co-costume designers on the project. Stina has collaborated with Wendy before, and this show seemed like a natural fit, given their mutual love of opera and the fact that Stina’s signature draped designs lend themselves well to Wendy’s multicentury fantasy.
