The Gay Head 10K committee has announced that registration is open for the third annual Gay Head 10K road race, “Run for the Light,” to be held Sunday, Oct. 4 at 10 am. The entry fee is $30 — $50 day of race — and the field will be limited to 500 runners.

Proceeds from the race help to fund the continued restoration and maintenance of the newly relocated Gay Head Lighthouse, according to a press release.

The 10K starts under the beam of the Gay Head Lighthouse, then proceeds down the hill past the Aquinnah Cultural Center onto State Road, proceeding around Moshup Trail, which leads back to the loop at the Cliffs. The finish line lands runners in the shadow of the Lighthouse after they complete the circle.

“The course is at once challenging, historic, and picturesque,” said Martha Vanderhoop, chairman of the Gay Head 10K. “And this year is a celebration of the Light’s move to its new, safer location.”

There is a new twist this year: Aquinnah selectman Spencer Booker has issued a challenge to selectmen in all the Island towns to race against him. Committee members encourage selectmen to accept the challenge.
