West Tisbury resident Les Cutler placed second in the 70-74 age category at the U.S. Masters National Open Water Championship held Saturday, August 29 in Hague, N.Y.

On a chilly 63° morning, approximately 130 competitors started the 2.5-kilometer swim in the cool, choppy waters of Lake George. The conditions were challenging, with 115 of the swimmers successfully completing the swim within the mandatory 75-minute time limit. Some swimmers were helped from the water during the race, while others did not complete the swim within the specified time limit.

Les Cutler covered the distance in 70 minutes and 49 seconds, placing second in the country in his age group. Mr. Cutler coaches the Phoenix Swim Club of Martha’s Vineyard, and is a member of the Martha’s Vineyard Masters swim team.
