Student journalists from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School won several major journalism awards from the New England Scholastic Press Association (NESPA) last Friday in Boston at the organization’s 70th annual conference.
The awards recognized individual student achievements and honored the “outstanding quality of the entire body of work” published in the High School View, the high school’s student newspaper, which is published in The Times. The High School View is published weekly during the school year with the support of many Island businesses and individuals.
MVRHS teachers Kate Hennigan and Dan Sharkovitz served as the newspaper’s co-advisors over the past year.
The student newspaper won the “Highest Achievement Award” in its class and “First Place Honors” in the “All–New England” award category. These awards lauded the efforts of the newspaper’s editors in chief –– juniors Henry Hitchings and Mackenzie Condon, and senior Rose Engler.
Several students received individual “Special Achievement Awards” for excellence in scholastic editing and publishing.
Mackenzie Condon won for her news story, “New track promises community support” and shared an award with fellow junior Alexis Condon for their news story, “Nor’easter traps vacationers off-Island.” Sophomore Emily Gazzaniga won for her feature story, “Volunteers experience global exchange.” Senior Lizzie Williamson won for her bylined column “Lost and Found”; and sophomore Daniel Rivard won for his news photo, “Band establishes a community presence.”
