Fair-goers get tossed around in the Zipper ride on Thursday afternoon. - Sam Moore

Under sunny skies,on a not-too-hot mid-August day — crowds gathered as they do each summer for one of the Vineyard’s highlight events.

In the days and nights to come, more than 30,000 entry tickets will be sold — many to people who come day after day, to ride rides, show off their dogs, win prizes, and look at the creations of fellow Islanders. Some will say they come just for the food, or just for the chance to see baby pigs, or just for the skillet toss, or just to see Kelly Peters return to the stage with his crew.

But we’re betting all will say they leave happy.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Fair in one glance (maps, schedules, VTA schedule, etc).

Here’s an outline of what’s new this year.

And here are good taste columnist Marnely Murray’s can’t-miss-Fair-food stops.

The Fairgrounds are open from 10 am to 11 pm on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. On Sunday, hours are 9:30 am to 7 pm. For more information as well as a complete outline of the fair schedule, visit marthasvineyardagriculturalsociety.org
