To the Editor:
Jack Fruchtman’s essay, “Climate change, the Vineyard environment, and the president” (Jan. 5), highlighted so many of the depressing ways in which Mr. Trump’s incoming administration threatens the progress America has made on climate change. However, Mr. Fruchtman didn’t give readers any suggestions for actions to take on climate change so that we feel empowered, rather than powerless and despairing.
Here are a few things readers can do to resist climate inaction: Join a climate organization, and/or make a donation to one. Talk about some aspect of climate every day, even just a passing comment, to friend, family, or stranger; preventing climate silence is a form of resistance. Call or email Governor Baker, your state representative, and your state senator, urging them to do more to promote renewable energy and efficiencies. Contact massenergy.org to opt for 100 percent local renewable energy: Resist national governmental inaction with positive, personal local action.
Since many people consider carbon-emissions pricing to be the most effective way to cut emissions, find out more about carbon-pricing legislation being proposed by our state legislature.
For more information, contact local Citizens’ Climate Lobby volunteers; branches are in the process of being formed in Woods Hole and Plymouth.
