
Defending champ Michael Schroeder of Charlotte, N.C. ran to victory in the 14th annual 5K for KJ, Saturday morning on the high school cross-country course.
Schroeder crossed the finish line in 17:26.71, outpacing 119 runners in the event which honors former Vineyard harrier Kevin Johnson, who died in an automobile accident in 2004. Proceeds from the race benefit the Kevin H. Johnson Cross-Country Scholarship Fund, which provides $1,000 scholarships for two members of the MVRHS cross-country team upon graduation to use toward college.
Ian Neill (17:30.73) ran second, followed by Jack Lionette (3rd, 18:29.09), Ian MacLellan (4th, 18:59.74), Tom Sykes (5th, 19:33.88), Nate Porterfield (6th, 20:15.79), Mark Natachioni (7th,20:45.97) and Mason Fischer (8th, 20:56.24).
Wren Christy, who helped lead the MVRHS girls to the Eastern Mass. cross-country championship on Nov. 10, was the first woman to finish and placed ninth in 21:18.87. John Stanwood (21:31.41) was tenth.
