Inaugural Vineyard Wind scholars complete STEM program

The inaugural class of Vineyard Wind scholars graduated from the Advanced Studies & Leadership Program at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

The summertime STEM course program encouraged minority and female students to pursue STEM professions and career opportunities. The scholarships sponsored the full $1,300 tuition and other expenses for seventh-grade students for the three-week resident summer camp at the academy. Based on academic achievement and financial need, scholarships were awarded to 12 students from Martha’s Vineyard, Barnstable, Dartmouth, Falmouth, New Bedford, and Wareham.

The scholarships are funded by Vineyard Wind with the goal of training and mentoring local residents for careers in the renewable energy industry.

Students enrolled in three courses. Course offerings included “Power Engineering and Renewable Energy,” “Navigation and Shiphandling,” “Use of Remotely Operated Vehicles in Oceanography,” “Marine Science of Cape Cod,” and “Emergency Management.”
