Season preview
This week, the spring season will officially kick off for MVRHS athletes and coaches, taking part in their first games, matches, and meets. Things began yesterday, when the boys lacrosse team traveled to Bourne to play the Canalmen after our press deadline. They’ll then have their home opener next Thursday, April 6, versus Dennis-Yarmouth at 3 pm.
On Friday, varsity baseball will travel to Taunton to play Bristol Plymouth Regional Tech at 4 pm, and varsity softball will travel to Bourne to play the Canalmen at 3:45. Their home openers will be on April 10 versus Monomoy, and April 6 against Barnstable, respectively.
“The team has been full throttle for the past week,” Coach Kyle Crossland of the baseball team said. “I am looking forward to seeing how this team comes together, and the example this senior class sets on the younger players, as well as how the younger players challenge the veterans for playing time.”
Today, the boys and girls track and field teams will host Sturgis West for a dual meet at 3 pm. On Tuesday, April 4, they will follow up this meeting with another Cape and Island battle against Dennis-Yarmouth, away at 4.
Next up, on Sunday afternoon, the girls and boys varsity tennis teams will host Dover-Sherborn at the Fennessy Courts, at 1:30 and 3:30, respectively.
“This season I am really looking forward to getting to know the boys better and watching them soar,” Coach Nicole Macy of the boys team stated. “Our top seven players from last year are all returning … This is a group that has tasted success, and are hungry to achieve it again.”
Coach William Rigali of the girls team echoed Macy’s sentiments, calling his team “the Tenacious 20.” They will be led by senior tri-captains Cali Giglio (reigning Cape and Islands MVP), Andrea Morse, and Evelyn Brewer.
Girls’ lacrosse will also be playing their first game on Sunday, in the morning at 11 versus Lexington, away. They will have their home opener next Tuesday against Sturgis West at 3 pm.
Finally, co-ed varsity sailing will begin their season in Connecticut this weekend, and unified track will have their home opener versus Riverview on Monday, April 3, rounding things out for the first week of MVRHS spring sports.
