Peter Vinton Ferguson, 90, of Macungie, Pa., and Oak Bluffs, passed away on July 30, 2026, with his family by his side. Born in Richmond, Va., he was the son of Mary Todd (Sawhill) and Thomas Wells Ferguson Jr.
Peter was a graduate of Wilbraham & Monson Academy, and was awarded an ROTC scholarship to Cornell University before earning his bachelor of fine arts degree from the Massachusetts College of Art. His professional career spanned decades as an advertising and marketing executive in Manhattan, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.
Peter had a deep love for music. He enjoyed playing the guitar, banjo, and ukulele, and could often be heard singing along to his favorite folk tunes. A devoted Red Sox fan and lifelong sports enthusiast, he played soccer throughout high school and college, and enjoyed golf, tennis, and many other sports, maintaining his fitness well into his late 80s.
Having moved multiple times throughout his adulthood, he was an active member at the local church in every hometown, most recently Faith Presbyterian Church in Emmaus, Pa.
Peter’s love of Martha’s Vineyard began in 1953, when he spent his first summer working with his best friend. In 1989, Peter and his wife purchased their treasured cottage in Wesleyan Grove in the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association. Having vacationed in the circle with family since 1970, this special place became central to their lives. Peter continued his tradition of service by participating in multiple committees within the Camp Meeting Association, and serving on its board.
Peter’s quick wit, fun-loving nature, and unique ability to connect with people left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Whether through shared interests or heartfelt conversations, he made everyone feel valued.
Peter is survived by his daughters, Sue (Bill) Greenough, Amy (John) Victor, and Deb Ferguson; grandchildren Pete (Briana), Rob, Jason, Justin (Amela), and Chelsey; as well as several great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Patricia Ferguson; and his nieces, Jane Hueber and Jill Warmbier, and their families. He was predeceased by Barbara Lamont Ferguson, his wife of 49 years, and his brother, Thomas Wells Ferguson III.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
