Can we give a round of applause to everyone who remembers to send information to my email, marnely@gmail.com, for inclusion in this town column? Your efforts make my work at times effortless, and this week is packed with community news, direct from the source.
Starting with the Found Foods Supper Club, taking place on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10:30 am to noon at the FARM Institute. A hands-on cooking workshop will center around rescued and saved surplus ingredients. Participants will cook together, learn practical ways to reduce food waste, and take what they make home. More details on the Trustees’ website.
Secondly, this one is for the MVRHS class of 1966, a call out for their 60th reunion! Members of the class of 1966 at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and their guests are welcome to join their friends on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 1 to 4 pm at the Wharf in Edgartown. The cost is $45 per person, and does not include the cash bar. Enjoy seeing friends from the good old days while you snack on the Wharf’s best eats. If you are interested in joining, please contact Herb Ward at 508-693-7683 or wakemewhenitistime@outlook.com.
Third in the lineup, the League of Women Voters is hosting an event that is open to the public, and it’s all about the positions for the Martha’s Vineyard Commission and the Dukes County Commission that will be on the ballot in November. Do you know who represents our town? Several candidates are new to these roles, and several are incumbents. There are also write-in candidates. Come to a candidate forum on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 6 pm at the Edgartown library to learn more about these important positions and the people who want to represent you.
And last but certainly not least, Meris Keating, director of senior services at the Edgartown Council on Aging let me know about the fish distribution on Oct. 14. Any older adult can head to the Anchors on Wednesday morning starting at 8 am to get a number. Numbers are called in order of receipt starting at 8:30 am, and recipients collect the catch until it runs out.
Talking about fish of course reminds me of the Derby’s sole purpose, aside from building community: Since its inception, it has awarded annual scholarships to Martha’s Vineyard graduating seniors, and in 2026 awarded $115,000 in scholarships to 12 deserving graduates. So as you register for the Derby, weigh in fish, and buy merchandise, know that all of this goes to assisting in providing higher education access to Island students.
For those looking for good sales this week, J. McLaughlin on Main Street is having a warehouse sale, with an additional 40 percent off from Oct. 9 to 12! Stop in and check out their offerings!
As we wind down the official season and get into the local season, I’m writing this from my favorite third place in Edgartown, Behind the Bookstore. I’m chatting with owner Jeffrey and local businessman James Joyce, who recently had triple bypass surgery a few weeks ago, and is already out and about his everyday life. If you see him, make sure to wish him a continued recovery! Wishing all the restaurants in their last hurrah for the season a smooth transition and last service — thank you for feeding us this season, and we can’t wait to see you back open in the spring.
