The Island travel teams opened their seasons in the Cape Cod Youth Basketball League over the weekend with mixed results.
The fourth and fifth grade boys (a combined team of predominantly fourth graders) lost both of their games to the much larger fifth grade teams from Plymouth North and Plymouth South. For the Vineyard, Cam Napior managed 14 points over the course of the two games.
The sixth grade boys fared much better, beating Falmouth 33-30 and Dennis Yarmouth 33-24. The smaller Vineyard team, led by the elusive Antone Moreis, managed to outrun its opponents for a nice start to its inaugural season.
The seventh grade boys split their two games, losing to Mashpee 37-34 and beating Wareham 43-29. Andrew Marchand led the Vineyard against Mashpee with 12 points, while Ramon Dossantos scored 18 against Wareham.
The eighth grade boys team lost both of their games to the more experienced teams of Middleboro, 47-34, and Falmouth, 42-31. Aiden Araujo and Solon Oliver combined for 20 points against Middleboro, while Aiden and Jared Regan combined for 22 points against Falmouth.
Up next, on Saturday, Dec. 12, the girls eighth grade team will be home for two games at 9:30 am and 1 pm, the boys eighth grade team will play at 11:50 am and 3:20 pm, and the boys fifth grade team will play at 10:40 am and 2 pm. The sixth and seventh grade boys teams will be off-Island for the day.
All home games are played at the Oak Bluffs School gym.
