Deejays dominate the music scene in Oak Bluffs and Edgartown this weekend, and many of them will perform weekly throughout the summer. Stroll along Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs or around the Main Street/Dock Street center of Edgartown on a weekend evening (10 pm), and you’ll find the deejays spinning to your taste.

Vineyard music has a deeply rooted association with reggae. There is a cultural affinity for the easygoing and empowering philosophies that vibrate in Jamaican music. Island Thunder, driven by Island grown reggae disciples Spencer Binney and Carter Hakala, showcases the best of the genre with their reggae mix at The Lampost Thursday, at 9:30 pm, and at The Dive Bar Friday, June 1. Both are on Circuit Avenue, The Dive Bar the subterranean floor of The Lampost’s three levels.

The Sultans of Swing, a renowned act that performs frequently at the private events of presidents and celebrities, plays a weekly Friday gig at The Atlantic, at 2 Main Street in Edgartown. The Sultans, Jerry Bennett’s rotating cast of world class musicians, will absolutely bring the house down, even though one of their singers, Erika Van Pelt, will be away this summer on the American Idol Summer Tour, after finishing in American Idol’s top 10.

Master Exploder rocks The Dive Bar Saturday, June 2. The Dive Bar is “home field” for the band, whose punk influenced rock and roll is a dependable dance floor magnet.
