Hats off to the Class of 2012, who walked the Tabernacle stage on Sunday like so many before. I hope that you are all off to lives filled with fun and adventure, and hey, don’t forget to keep your ol’ Edgartown columnist in the loop!
Dianne Conover hosted a bunch of ladies at her house last weekend for a night of fashion and fun. Several of us walked the catwalk in looks by Lilly Pulitzer and Stella and Dot, which though somewhat terrifying was really quite a blast. Then corks were popped and we toasted to summer adventures yet to come. Among the models were a few little professionals in the making — Emily and Paige Anderson, Caroline and Kate Conover, and Ellie and Caroline Dolby each struck their poses with panache.
Congratulations to Lt. Anna-Elizabeth Villard-Howe of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), who recently took command of the research vessel Gloria Michelle as the ship’s first female captain. You’ve come a long way since the pirate ship set of our junior high performance of Peter Pan. Fair winds and following seas.
Well, anyone who has been following along for a while now knows how excited I am for Taste of the Vineyard. The Gourmet Stroll will take place tonight, Thursday, June 14, beginning at 6:30 pm on the Old Whaling Church lawn. The Stroll features a sampling of the Island’s best food, wine, and hand-crafted beers, set to the musical stylings of the Sultans of Swing — my very favorite way to kick off the summer social season. And all to benefit of Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust, who keep our historic buildings looking beautiful. The Patron’s Party and Gala Auction follows on June 16. For details, visit mvpreservation.org.
Herb Ward has alerted me that Bruce Doten will present a travelogue of Normandy, Brittany, and Paris, on Friday evening, June 22, at 7 pm, at the Federated Church Parish House on 45 South Summer St., Edgartown. Admission is free, and all are welcome.
Time to dust off your pom-poms, girls. Calling all current 5th, 6th and 7th graders! If you are interested in participating in Junior High Cheerleading in the fall of 2012, please contact Ms. Sue Costello at 508-627-9568 or email email@example.com. Rah, rah, rah!
The Rotary Club of MV will host their Charity Golf Tournament at the Vineyard Golf Club on June 15, beginning with a 9 am registration and a 10 am shotgun start. The event benefits Hospice and other Island charities. For more information, call 508-627-1161.
Happy birthday to Kevin Searle, who celebrates June 16; to Sara Tiemann and Michael Valenti, who celebrate June 18; and to Michael Gazaille and Ed Gargan, who celebrate June 19. I hope you find yourselves under a shining sun, surrounded by all your favorite people.
