Last week’s Regatta offered not only some exciting sailing competition but also some lovely views from the beach. Us landlubbers also enjoy the youngsters sailing just outside the harbor, especially in the early evening.
Kids are searching stores across town and having a great time. Where’s Waldo? Ask a youngster. Keen young eyes are enjoying the challenge. Parents are getting a chance to check out some stores they haven’t visited before. Seems like a winner all around.
Is tech too much for you? Drop in Saturday morning at the Vineyard Haven Library for help with eBooks and downloadable audiobooks. Get an informal demonstration of the library’s eReader devices including Nook, Sony Reader, and Kindle. Saturday afternoon from 1 to 3 be sure to check out the Mini Book Sale in the cool basement. All sales benefit the children’s programs. Take time to enjoy the Art in the Stacks. Our library has a lot to offer besides books.
Tuesday morning, those aged four and up are invited to laugh, sing, and dance with Ellen Allard at 11 am at the library. On Wednesday, from 3 to 5 pm, ages 8 to 11 will learn how to make bottle rockets and launch them with Bruce Riseborough. I expect this is outside because the announcement adds “weather permitting.”
Barb and Doug Peckham invite you to an Art Show and Sale at his studio on Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 4. The studio is at 56 Pennacook Avenue in Oak Bluffs. His spectacular watercolors, acrylics, pastels, and digitalized photography will be on display. We are so pleased that he is now feeling able to give us this treat.
At 4 pm this Sunday there is a Choral Evensong in celebration of the lives of Bishop John Burgess and his wife, Esther. This is also sponsored by Grace Church but will be held at Trinity Chapel in Oak Bluffs. The guest preacher is the Rev. Mark Bozzuti-Jones of Trinity Church on Wall Street in New York City. He is the author of a new book, “The Gospel of Barack Obama, According to Mark.” Music will be provided by The Vineyard Sound. A reception will follow and all are welcome. Don’t miss it. This is our turn. The Vineyard Haven Band is in concert at Owen Park this Sunday night. The music begins at 8 pm. The rain date is Monday. Bring chairs or a blanket and a picnic supper if you like.
If you still need some summer reading, you should stop in at the annual book sale of the Oak Bluffs Library. The sale begins Thursday morning at 10 o’clock and runs through Saturday.

There is a major discount for early registration for Cycle Martha’s Vineyard next fall. On Sunday, October 14, cyclists will enjoy a recreational ride on Martha’s Vineyard with a choice of 100K (Kilometers) or 50K.
