Christopher Lee Hargy, 43, of Edgartown died peacefully in his sleep at home on Thursday, August 9, 2012, surrounded by the people who loved him, following his courageous battle with cancer. His only regret was not having more time to spend with family and friends.

Chris was born on March 10, 1969 in Conyers, Georgia, to Donald and Karin Hargy. The family spent a large part of his youth moving from place to place because of his father’s work. Chris was involved in various sports (wrestling, football, sailing, swimming, and marksmanship), receiving numerous awards for each sport, but his true interest lay in cooking. He graduated from Johnson & Wales University and has worked hard to serve five-star cuisine in a variety of locales from upscale restaurants to the local County Jail.

He met and married the love of his life, Molly (Hathaway) Hargy. The two eventually settled here on Martha’s Vineyard, close to her family, where Chris finally found a place he could call home. They raised two beautiful children and Chris adapted to the Island way of life, volunteering for the Edgartown EMS and becoming a member of the Fire Department on the ladder truck while also working for the Dukes County Sheriff’s Department.

He enjoyed spending time with his family traveling, camping, and boating. He was always up for the challenge of participating in the local chowder and chili contests, winning many ribbons and compliments along the way.

Chris is survived by his loving wife, Molly, his two daughters, April and Samantha Hargy, all of Edgartown; his parents Donald and Karin Hargy of Wolfeboro, N.H.; his three brothers, David and his wife, Sunnan, of Shreveport, La., James (Jay) and his wife, Sandy, of Eliot, Me., Benjamin and his wife, Winny, of West Hartford, Conn.; his mother-in-law, Judy Hathaway, his sisters-in-law, Karen (Hathaway) Ames and her husband, Mark, and Wendy Hathaway, and his six nieces and nephews, John, Andrew, Ryan, Ruby, David, and Ella Hargy.

He will be missed by his family, friends, his faithful companion, Peanut, and equally faithful nemesis, Eddie.

A memorial service will be held on Friday August 17, at 11 am in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, North Summer St., Edgartown. Interment will immediately follow at the New West Side Cemetery on Robinson Rd. in Edgartown. All attending are welcome to join the family at the MV Rod and Gun Club on the Boulevard in Edgartown following services.

Memorial donations may be made to the Edgartown Firemen’s Association, PO Box 737, Edgartown, MA 02539 and the Dukes County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, PO Box 252, Edgartown, MA 02539.
