R.I. runner wins Sullivan; Vineyard's Ocean Eversley first woman

Jeff Howley of Providence won the 24th annual Sullivan 5K Run/Walk in 17:01, on a picture perfect Saturday, August 25, in Oak Bluffs, but Islanders dominated the other top spots.

Ocean Eversley of Oak Bluffs was the first woman to cross the finish line and clocked in at 22:55, 20th overall. Marston Clough of Vineyard Haven (33:36) and Jill Zamarro (33:37) of Oak Bluffs were the first walkers to finish.

Proceeds from the Sullivan road race benefit Martha's Vineyard Hospital.

The Sullivan staggers the starts and divides the race into separate running and walking events; 143 runners and 103 walkers competed.

In the 5K run, Lawrence Czaplewski of West Caldwell, N.J., was the race runner-up, with a time of 18:25.  Reaan Steenkamp of Vineyard Haven was third in 19:26. Fourth place went to Gibbons Sinclair of New York, N.Y., (19:31), and Zachary Zisis of Evanston, IL., (19:34) took fifth.

Other Island men to finish in the top twenty were: (12) Chris Decker, Vineyard Haven, 21:54; (15) Michael Mayone, Edgartown, 22:34; (16) Doug Best, Vineyard Haven, 22:37; and (18) Michael Zappula, Oak Bluffs, 22:46.

Vineyard women finishing behind Ocean Eversley in the top 50 were: (31) Allyson Metell, Oak Bluffs, 24:09; (34) Lisa Belcastro, Vineyard Haven, 24:30; and (35) Chantal Desgagut, Vineyard Haven, 24:31.

Eight local walkers made the top 50 behind Marston Clough and Jill Zamarro: (6) Pieter Pill, Vineyard Haven, 39:41; (14) Mary Tahmoush, Oak Bluffs, 43:53; (17) Dorothy Sullivan, Aquinnah, 44:11; (22) Donna Rhoades, West Tisbury, 44:44; (25) Justin Wyner, Edgartown, 45:07; (37) Marietta Cleasby, Oak Bluffs, 48:11; (38) Ida Gear, Oak Bluffs, 48:41; and (44) Alan Willens, Oak Bluffs, 50:06.
