Carol Metcalf Hole, 93, of Vineyard Haven, passed away at her home on January 16 surrounded by her loved ones both physically and spiritually.
Carol was the youngest daughter of Harold and Maude Metcalf and the granddaughter of Edwin Metcalf, founder of the Columbian Rope Company. Born in Auburn, NY on December 14, 1919, Carol was educated at the Baldwin School in Bryn Marw, PA and attended Connecticut College.
Carol was an active member of the Owasco Country Club. Along with her two sisters, Nancy and Jean, the Metcalf girls were a force to be reckoned with in golf and tennis. In addition to the Country Club she was involved in many community activities such as the Women’s Union Thrift Shop. Carol was a loving wife to Legare Romig Hole and loving mother to her three sons, Legare Romig Hole Jr, Stephen Metcalf Hole, and Allen Nye Hole. She moved to Martha’s Vineyard to spend her later years living between Providencials, TCI, and the Vineyard. Carol was loved by one and all for her infectious smile, the twinkle in her eye, and her love for life.
Carol married Legare Romig Hole in Auburn, NY on May 17, 1941. She is survived by her three sons; Legare Romig Hole Jr. of Palm Harbor, FL, Stephen Metcalf Hole of Atlanta, GA, and Allen Nye Hole of West Chester, PA; and 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Carol was predeceased by her husband Legare Romig Hole on December 30, 2000, her oldest sister Nancy Metcalf Green Wyatt-Brown in August 2002, her older sister Jean Metcalf Chapman on February 28, 2012, and her grandson Legare Romig Hole III on May 17, 1996.
