Bridge closed

Five tables were in play at the final 2010 summer meetings of the Bridge Club of Martha’s Vineyard in the Tisbury senior center, Saturday. North/South honors were won by Paul Howes and Art Spielvogel. Runners up (and tied) were Brooks Robards with Jim Kaplan and Lee Scott with Helen Colvin.

Atop the East/West pack were Claudia Bowser and Clara Hargrave, followed by Maggie Gasnick and Brenda Davenport.

Place and show

Lily Davey and Shannon O’Connor represented the M.V. Figure Skating Club at the 2010 Providence Open, Saturday. Shannon was second in Pre-Juvenile Showcase. Lily was third in Pre-Juvenile Showcase.

Both skaters are coached by Jane Elizabeth Taylor and Beth Blankenship-O’Connor.


The Vineyard FC Masters hosted the Los Inkas Sport Club at its home-away-from-home field at Cape Cod Tech, Sunday. The teams played to a 4-4 tie. MV goals were scored by Ignacio “Nacho” Vignolo (2), Cezar DaSilva, and Skip Dostal. The Islanders remain in first place in the Over the Hill Soccer League’s division 5 South. VFC is at Mansfield this Sunday.

Dan Sharkovitz wants everyone to know that there are pick-up softball games at Manter’s Memorial Field, Fridays, beginning at 4:45 pm and at Veterans War Memorial Park, Sundays at 9:00 am.

Driving like crazy

The MVRHS golf team is off to a happy start with three wins in as many matches. After dropping Bishop Stang in the season opener, the MV divot diggers beat Whitman Hansen, 251-266.Cal Fiore, Justin Smith, and Matt Marchand all had medalist rounds of 40, followed by Kat DeBettencourt’s 42, Corey Perotta’s 44 and Alex Bilzerian’s 45.

Friday, it was Harwich’s turn to bow, 33 to 29.

Alex Bilzarian, Corey Perrotta, Matt Marchand, Justin Smith, and Kat DeBettencourt all won their matches.

After winning their first three matches, the MV Golf team bowed to Falmouth at the Falmouth Country Club’s par 37 course, Monday, 240–258.


The M.V. Horse Council will sponsor a Dressage Show at the Ag Hall, Sunday, September 19, beginning at 8 am. Admission is free. For more information see

Skating school

The Island Ice Skating School, an affiliate of the Ice Skating Institute, will register students for the fall-winter session at 9:30 am, Saturday, Sept. 18, at the MV Arena. IISS has three professionals: Julie Meader, Diana Woods, and Stephanie Andrade-Rogers. Email with questions.
