Young guns took to the West Tisbury soccer field Saturday

Soccer is the game each Saturday at the West Tisbury School. Six teams of mini kickers made up of youngsters six and younger play spirited games on teams named for some of the world’s most famous: Boca Juniors, Bordeaux, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Barcelona, and Bayern Munchen.

There are also six teams of Under-8: AC Milan, Arsenal, Flamengo, Galaxy, Liverpool, and Real Madrid.

The Under-10 teams are Ajax Amsterdam, Benfica, Lyon, Rangers (Glasgow), Revolution, and River Plate.

Junior High school league action

The fall also brings the return of school league play.

In girls action Saturday, Oak Bluffs defeated Edgartown 2-1. The Cottage City side currently leads the standings with 7 points, followed by West Tisbury (4), Edgartown (3), and Charter/Tisbury United (0).

The boys field teams in both jayvee and varsity squads. On the junior circuit Saturday, The Tate brothers, Jordan and Joshua, led Edgartown to an exciting 4-3 win over Up-Island. The Eagles are top of the table with 7 points. The Up-Islanders are next with 4, trailed by Tisbury (3), and Oak Bluffs (0).

In varsity play, Up-Island chalked up a pair of wins, beating Oak Bluffs 2-1 and the Charter School 4-0.

The victories gave UPI a 4-1-1 record and 13 points. Oak Bluffs has nine points and the Charters 1 point.

Youth Hockey’s impressive starts

The MV Travel Mites ice hockey team buried Falmouth, at the MV Arena, Saturday, 10-0, skating “like a well-oiled machine” according to delighted coach, Andy Merrick.

The Cape & Islands Junior High team defeated Gateway twice, 8-0 and 5-2 at Falmouth, Saturday.

The MV Squirts beat Barnstable at the Barnstable Arena, Sunday, 8-3.

Wilson Slayton scored four times. Hunter Ponte had a hat trick. Jack Murray also found the net and assisted. Joe Serpa was credited with two assists.
