The Martha’s Vineyard Youth Hockey League teams enjoyed a successful week at the Martha’s Vineyard Arena.
On Sunday the Nantucket Pee Wees challenged the Vineyard Pee Wees in a double-header. The Vineyarders won the first game 3-1 on goals by JJ Mendez unassisted, Jonas Lukowitz assisted by Kylie Hatt and Jacob Gunderson assisted by Mendez.
Mendez scored the only MV goal in the second game, unassisted.
The checking by forwards Justin Alexander, Saige Araujo, Nick Bischoff, Colin Buckley, Jack Garrett, Jacob Gunderson, JJ Mendez, and the tenacious Belle Dinning was solid in both games. Brahmin Thurber, Kylie Hatt, Jonas Lukowitz, and Shay Sullivan provided effective defense fronting goaltenders Zach Fullin and Cathal Robinson.
In a Bantam State Playdown game, the MV Bantams shut out the Canal team at the Arena, 4-0, Wednesday.
After two periods, the Islanders led 1-0. But the third frame was all Vineyard with two goals by Tyson Araujo, giving him a hat trick, and another by Andrew Carroll.
In Saturday’s Pee Wee State Play Down, the Islanders bested North Attleboro, 4-1. The visitors scored first. MV replied with four unanswered goals by Josh Forend (2), Mason Jeffers, and James Sashin. Wyatt Jackson had an outstanding game between the pipes for the Vineyard.
The MV Junior High hockey team defeated K.P. Connors at Raynham, Friday, 4-0. Emerson Mahoney scored the game’s first goal on a breakaway in the first period. Nick Vukota followed moving past two defenders and beating the Connors goalie in the top corner. Tristan Araujo made a perfect headman pass to send Joe Davies in alone to start the scoring in the second period. Vukota’s pass to Austin Morely in the corner left Emerson Mahoney open in front to find the back of the net for his second goal, the team’s fourth.
