Sharks on deck

The logo for the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks, the Island’s entry into the nascent Futures Collegiate Baseball League of New England, was unveiled this week. With a tip of the cap to “Jaws,” it features a home plate design with “Martha’s Vineyard Sharks” above purple waves and a shark’s black fin jutting out of the waves. The purple color was selected to mirror MVRHS athletic teams.

League organizers hope to have six teams competing once the season starts in June. The Sharks will play half of their 50-game schedule on the regional high school’s “Field of Dreams.”

The club has also announced its new web site is mvsharks.com.

Rod and Gun Club black powder shoot

Cold and blustery conditions failed to prevent the Martha’s Vineyard Rod & Gun Club from staging its annual Black Powder Shoot on Sunday, Dec. 5.

Top honors were won by Philip Jordan of West Tisbury who won the primitive firearm title. Michael Ferry, also of West Tisbury, won the modern firearm competition.

Runners up were Brian Athearn in the primitive division and Steve Jordan in the modern division.

The Bill Nicholson Award, which honors the memory of Civil War enthusiast Bill Nicholson, was presented to Tom O’Hanlon of Edgartown.

Other shooters took home hams donated by Cronig’s Market.
