Vineyard mites, squirts faced tough off-Island teams in Ryan Mone tourney

The Vineyard mite and squirt B teams from the Cape and Islands League took to the ice last weekend for the annual Ryan Mone Memorial Tournament at the Martha’s Vineyard Arena.

The mites made a strong showing. The team finished the round robin games at 2-1, before bowing to the unbeaten Southeastern Connecticut Seahawks from Norwich, in Sunday’s final, 10-4. Hunter Meader (2), Jackson Pachico, and Aidan Araujo scored the M.V. goals. Hunter Meader, Veronica Wendt, and Logan Araujo had assists.

The squirts split their three round robin games at 1-1-1 and lost to the Seahawks 3-0 in the consolation final.

Tournament play started on Friday, with the Vineyard mites taking on the South Shore Eagles from Rockland.

M.V. rolled to a 5-0 lead, on its way to a 6-2 win. Six different Islanders put the biscuit in the basket: Veronica Wendt, Hunter Meader, Logan Araujo, Hoffman Hearn, Kenny Hatt, and William Bruguiere. Assists went to Aidan Araujo, Kenny Hatt, and Jackson Pachico. Micah Vought was superb in goal.

The squirts closed out the evening with a 4-3 loss to Plymouth. Willson Slayton and Hunter Ponte had a goal and an assist apiece. Jack Murray and William Hermann each earned an assist.

Both Vineyard teams played twice on Saturday.

The mites opened the day against the Seahawks and lost 7-1. Logan Araujo scored for M.V.

In the nightcap, the Vineyard downed the Tri-County Saints from Mansfield, 7-2.

Again, M.V. spread the wealth on the score sheet. Logan Araujo chalked up a goal and two assists. Peter Gillis, Kenny Hatt, Jackson Pachico, Lauren Boyd, Hoffman Hearn, and Aiden Marek scored the other Vineyard goals. Aidan Araujo had two assists. Liam Marek, William Bruguiere, and Hunter Meader had one assist each.

The squirts were in fine form on Saturday, beating Tri-County 4-3 in the first game and roaring back from a 5-1 deficit to tie the Seahawks 5-5 in the evening contest.

Hunter Ponte and Willson Slayton scored two goals apiece against Tri-County. Cabot Thurber and Jack Murray earned assists. Michael Metcalf was solid in goal.

Against the Seahawks, Hunter Ponte tallied a hat trick and added an assist, Willsun Slayton had a goal and two assists, and Jack Murray scored once for M.V.
