Girls’ travel team finishes with perfect record, Cape trophy

The fifth grade Martha’s Vineyard girls’ travel basketball team played Falmouth Saturday morning for all the marbles in a championship game at the Bourne Middle School gym in front of scores of cheering Vineyard and Falmouth fans.

When the game ended, the Vineyard, coached by Maureen Hill, Beth Sawyer, and Mike deBettencourt, held an unblemished record of 12 wins and no losses and the Cape Cod Youth Basketball League trophy.

Falmouth dug down and held the Vinyarders to 10 points in the first half while scoring six of their own. But the Islanders added 18 points in the second half and held Falmouth to eight, Final score: MV 28, Falmouth 14. Molly deBettencourt accounted for 23 of her team’s total.

The team’s roster: Kiana Casey, Molly deBettencourt, Devin Hill, Rebecca Lima, Ashlee Moreis, Caitlyn Patanaude, Kat Roberts, Megan Sawyer, and Liz Williamson.

Prior to Saturday, the team’s next-to-last game was with Falmouth at Falmouth, and the margin of victory was 27-8. The team’s high scorer, Molly deBettencourt, accounted for 23 of her team’s points.

The final game of the season was with Dartmouth, third in the league standings, and the Vineyarders prevailed, 35-18. Molly deBettencourt led all scorers with 25 points.

7 th graders stopped by Dartmouth

The seventh grade girls travel team all but matched their younger schoolmates, but Dartmouth stood in the way. The MV team, occupying second place in the standings, took on the league’s top-seeded Dartmouth in the championship game at Bourne on Sunday.

At the half the Islanders trailed by only four, but the Indians pulled away in the second half to claim the game and the title, 28-19.

Erin Hill was the high scorer for the Vineyard with 6, followed by Sam Hargy with 5.
