A privilege to serve

To the Editor:

In honor of Memorial Day, Raven 1, an AmeriCorps NCCC team working on the Island, would like to thank all the amazing Island residents for welcoming us into your community and allowing us to serve.

We are proud to serve you and America. Likewise, we encourage the community to remember our fallen soldiers and loved ones and to commit some time to serving the nation.

The nine members of Raven 1 rebuild and strengthen communities through nonprofits, local governments, and schools. Each of us serves for particular reasons, including adventure, networking, and travel. But at the end of our 10 months, we will gain great personal growth and national pride. As Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

As our time on the Island continues, we see a community of hardworking families, building a better future for their children and the world. Many people thank us, but truly we should thank all of you for your inspiring efforts, from The FARM Institute and Vineyard Voyagers, educating and empowering our youth, to The Trustees of the Reservations working to conserve Massachusetts resources. You have shown the true colors of the American spirit.

As JFK said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

If you would like to learn more about how you can serve, visit AmeriCorps.gov or call 1-800-942-2677. And if we can help your community or organization out this June, call us at 315-247-9172.

Thank you and God Bless America.
