Mary Elizabeth Kuehne died at home in Norridgewock, Maine, on December 11 after a valiant battle against breast cancer. She spent her last days surrounded by the love of her husband, brother, children and their families.

Born in Sale, England, in 1943, she attended the Secondary Modern School. At the tender age of 18, Mary bravely followed her mother across the pond from England to Minnesota and then on to Martha’s Vineyard where she met and married George Kuehne. Mary and George moved to Maine in 2008 after his retirement from Maciel Marine.

A loved and talented gardener, Mary spent years cultivating beautiful gardens for clients in Seven Gates Farm and elsewhere on the Vineyard as well as in her own yard on the Island and later in Norridgewock. Mary loved antiques and country furnishings and feeding her wild birds. She surrounded herself with rustic country charm, decor, and hand-painted signs, many created by her own loving hands as well as her beautifully crafted scrapbooks.

Her spouse, George Kuehne, four sons, and their wives, Stephen and Cyndi of Edgartown, David and Missy of Edgartown, Robert and Sandra of Falmouth, Chris and Jen of Centerville, five grandchildren, Tayla, Alyssa, Sara, Kaylee, and Braden, are mourning her passing. She also leaves behind her brother, Bob Marsh, his wife, Evelyn, of Manchester, England, and their children Michael and Anne Marie, many wonderful friends, and her beloved Goldens Emma and Molly.

Her parents, Winnie Marsh Silva and Frank Marsh, predeceased Mary. To honor her wishes, Mary’s ashes will be scattered in a remembrance garden at the Southern Cemetery, Chorlton-Cum-Hardy in Manchester, England, alongside her mother and father.Thank you to her friends, doctors, nurses, caregivers and hospice workers for their care and consideration since her courageous battle began in 2008. Always in our hearts.

Mary requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Somerset Animal Shelter, 123 Middle Road, Skowhegan, ME 04976.
