The Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group, the Island’s regional shellfish organization, will host a community workshop January 21 to explore the ideas and challenges of shell recycling on the Vineyard.
The guest speaker is Stephan Abel, executive director of the Maryland Oyster Recovery Partnership, who will speak about successful shell recycling in the Chesapeake Bay area. Shellfish group director Rick Karney, and Emma Green-Beach of the nearby Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory will talk about the importance of shells in marine ecosystems. Jessica Kanozak will report on the progress of the first year of the M.V. Shell Recovery Partnership.The workshop will conclude with a panel discussion of ways to expand the program and make it sustainable, according to a press release. The workshop is free and the public is invited. Coffee and a light lunch will be provided, with chowder donated by State Road Restaurant.
