State law and waterfront property

To the Editor:

I am writing this letter to correct two factual errors in your article dated January 5, “Public access agreement will fund Edgartown harbor improvements.”

1. The Vietor family has never owned the Harborside Inn in Edgartown, nor has the family ever had at any time an interest or participation in any other entity whatsoever that might be controlled by the Harborside Inn.

2. The land in question has never been “state owned land.” Rather it has been privately owned for more than a century, and until the 1944 Hurricane even had a private residence on it.

In order to avoid any more misrepresentations, It would be probably be helpful if your reporters could gain a little more understanding of Massachusetts Chapter 91 statutes and how they relate to usage of waterfront property throughout the Commonwealth. Thank you for correcting the mistakes.
