Trash to treasure by Vineyard artists

Several Island artists have found a new use for old worn-out skateboard decks by painting them, reappropriating them as art, and auctioning them off to the public via Facebook. You can see the boards at Art for the Park, an oysters and champagne brunch at Atria on Sunday, August 18.

During brunch, you can choose to buy a board after 12 noon for $1,500, or you can participate in the online auction, which ends on August 30 at 12 midnight. The brunch, which takes place from 12 noon to 3 pm at the Edgartown restaurant, includes boards designed by Traeger di Pietro, Dan VanLandingham, Terry Crimmen, Tara Kenny, and others. The decks are currently on view at the Eisenhauer Gallery and PIKNIK in Edgartown, and The Green Room and the Scottish Bakehouse in Vineyard Haven. Also enjoy old-time bluegrass music with Louise Meadow.

Proceeds from the auction benefit the Martha’s Vineyard Skatepark, a public community park across from Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, which also offers a “Summer Skate” program on a drop-in basis.
