Jennie Lindland of Edgartown, a freshman guard on the Bridgewater State University women’s basketball team and a 2013 MVRHS graduate, was nominated Rookie of the Week by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC). Jenny scored 23 points in just 28 minutes of playing time while shooting an impressive 83.3% (10-12) from the floor in the Bears’ two wins at the Hockenbury Classic, played last weekend at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont.

Lindland tallied 13 points as she knocked down 5 of 6 field goal attempts and was a perfect 3-for-3 at the line in the semifinal win over Bates. She added 11 points on 5 of 6 shooting to go along with a steal in the championship game victory over Norwich.

Over the first seven games of her collegiate career, Jenny is averaging 5.3 points per game, sporting a solid .516 (16-31) field goal percentage. She has four steals and three blocked shots and is shooting 71.4% (5-7) at the free throw line.

Girls travel basketball

The girls eighth grade travel team won a pair of games over the weekend on the home court in Oak Bluffs. The Vineyard started off with a 43-21 win over Rochester. Molly deBettencourt had the hot hand from outside and finished with 20 points. Devin Hill scored seven. The girls followed up with complete team efforts at both ends of the floor in a 47-19 win over Nauset. The visitors from North Eastham couldn’t handle the Vineyard press. Molly deBettencourt scored 11, Devin Hill added 10, and Meghan Sawyer had eight. The girls play at Lakeville Saturday at 10 am before returning home later in the afternoon for a 3:10 pm game against Barnstable.
