To the Editor:
The proposal under consideration for the monstrous expansion of the Stop & Shop is appalling to say the least.
I was brought up in Vineyard Haven. Generations of my family have been full or part time residents of the town, and many still are. It has always been the perfect place for me, my children, and my ancestors. The Vineyard represents for all of us the most beautiful, sensitive, and pure place in the world.
The idea that a huge corporation might be allowed to come in and ruin our precious downtown is inexcusable. The character would be completely lost. Small businesses in all likelihood would be forced out of business, and tourism would clearly suffer in the face of such unmitigated greed, ugliness, and bad taste.
This behemoth would turn the town into an environmental, ecological, and visual nightmare. How anyone would support it is unthinkable to me.
