The Vineyard varsity softball team traveled to Bourne, Tuesday, where they lost an extra-inning heartbreaker, 8-7, on Erica Fleming’s walk-off bases-loaded single in the bottom of the eighth.
The Vineyarders (3-6) threatened with two runners on in the top of the seventh. Sarah Strem took first base after being hit by a pitch, Amanda Fielding sacrificed her to second, and Emily Turney drew a walk. But Fleming, the Bourne pitcher, retired the next three batters to get out of trouble.
The game went into extra innings after the Vineyarders quelled a Bourne threat in the bottom half. With the bases loaded, Cana Courtney snagged a line drive in left field and threw home to complete a double play. Pitcher Jessica Sonia ended the inning by fielding a grounder and throwing home to catcher Miranda Tokarz.
Emily Turney was 3 for 5 with two triples and a double. Shelby Lavin also tripled twice.
“We had some real good bright spots,” Vineyard coach Donald Herman said, “but 17 walks and a couple of errors didn’t help our cause.” Four of Bourne’s eight runs were unearned.
The Vineyarders host Bishop Stang Friday and Madison Park of Boston Monday. Both games get underway at 3:15 pm.
