In a dramatic finish to the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club skeet championship Sunday afternoon, Dick Carlson of Oak Bluffs beat Bill Damora of Oak Bluffs and Pleasant Beach, N.J., in the skeet equivalent of sudden death.

In their first round of 50 targets, Dick shot 48, Bill shot 47, and Bill Shanok of Chilmark and New York City shot 47. In his second round, Bill Damora improved his score to 48, setting up a head-to-head shoot-off in which each man was required to shoot doubles, beginning with station three. Dick was up first and broke both targets. Bill missed one.

“Bill shot great,” Dick said of his competition. Final results were: Dick Carlson first, Bill Damora second, and Bill Shanok third.

Brian Welch of Oak Bluffs took 1st place in Class “B” with a score of 46 and Brian Reed of Oak Bluffs took the Class “C” title with a score of 43.

The Club’s annual Trap Championship will be held beginning at 12 noon on Sunday, August 17. Louise Marx from Chappaquiddick will be on hand to defend her 2013 title. Non-members are welcome to compete and enjoy the action as well. The club is located off 3rd Street in Edgartown.
