Edgartown officials say stay out of the surf today

The Edgartown Parks department is requesting that people stay out of the water along South Beach due to extremely dangerous surf conditions. Children are prohibited from the water and beach personnel are allowing only experienced swimmers into the water, Marilyn Wortman, parks administrator, told The Times. “It is very treacherous,” she said.

The National Weather Service in Taunton reported Hurricane Cristobal will bring dangerous surf and rip currents to south facing ocean beaches off Rhode Island and Massachusetts through Friday. A high surf advisory remains in effect until 8 am, Friday.

The National Weather Service said there is a high risk of dangerous surf and rip currents.
