To the Editor:
On August 7 I sustained a severe knee injury while playing tennis. Fellow players helped me into the back seat of a spectator’s SUV in which I was driven to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. The driver parked at the curb approximately 30 feet from the ER entrance, as close as a non-ambulance vehicle is allowed. Medical personnel put me in a leg splint before placing me on a stretcher and wheeling me into the ER.
Imagine my surprise when weeks later I received a $1,800 bill from the Oak Bluffs Ambulance for transport from the “Hospital parking lot” to the “Hospital emergency room.” My calls to the ambulance center office have yet to be returned.
