Island veterans are once again the target of a telephone solicitation scam, according to Dukes County Director of Veterans Services JoAnn Murphy. Ms. Murphy told The Times in phone call Monday that several veterans have received telephone calls asking them to donate to the American Legion and that someone will stop by to pick up their check. “If you don’t know who the callers are and they offer to pick up a check at your door, be leery,” Ms. Murphy said.
The American Legion is currently conducting a legitimate statewide fundraiser to solicit ads to run in a convention booklet that will be distributed in June, she added. Contact Bob Baranowski, the fundraiser’s chairman, at 413-782-3620 with any questions.
