Our sympathies go out to friends and family of Buddy Mayhew. He was always an Islander in his heart.

This Saturday afternoon, buy your books at the Vineyard Haven Library. The sale runs from 2 to 4 pm and benefits the children’s programs. I had a friend who said used books were the best gifts because they came with love in them. She always told me she wouldn’t give away a book without reading it first.

At the Vineyard Haven Library this Sunday at 2 pm, the Peter Luce Play Readers perform the documentary play Seven as a staged reading. The play is based on personal interviews with seven women who overcame serious obstacles to create changes in human rights in their home countries.

Leslie J. Stark adapted the play for the Luce Play Readers and will direct the performance. The cast includes Connie McCreery (as Inez McCormack of Northern Ireland), Charlena Seymour (Anabella DeLeon of Guatemala), Nora Nevin (Farida Azizi of Afghanistan), Rise Terney (Marina Pisklakova of Russia), Sofia Anthony (Mu Sochua of Cambodia), Ellie Beth (Hafsat Abiola of Nigeria), and Elaine Bart (Mukhtar Mai of Pakistan). The play runs just over one hour without intermission. Refreshments will be served following the free performance.

There is a special addition to the library’s Adult Crafts series offered this week. Make It Mighty Ugly night at 7 pm this Tuesday includes a Skype session with author Kim Piper Werker. You will attempt to make a truly ugly creature. This class is for you if you want to unlock your creativity, get unblocked, or free yourself of expectations.

This week the Vineyard Playhouse offers Monday night at the movies with Jamie Alley on the Patricia Neal Stage upstairs. In Sitting Pretty Clifford Webb is a prissy genius author who takes the job of babysitter to three rambunctious children as research for his book on life in the suburbs. This features Robert Young and Maureen O’Hara. Remember?

You can support Featherstone Center for the Arts this Sunday when 15 percent of sales at Rainy Day will be donated to Featherstone. You should plan to visit the annual Gift Show at Featherstone that starts a week from Saturday. You support both Featherstone and local artists when you buy your holiday gifts at the show.

Last Sunday afternoon the Harley riders gave Santa a lift on a motorcycle right down Main Street. It seems a little early to be seeing Santa Claus in town, but you know he has to start looking early if he is going to be able to find all the toys he needs for kids.

Businesses downtown are running raffles to benefit those who need your help to get enough to eat this winter. The shop donates the prize and all the money collected will go to provide food for our hungry neighbors.

We have been somewhat surprised that we haven’t needed a propane delivery since last May. I thought we had a lovely summer but never realized it had extended so far into the fall. Just one more thing we should be thankful for.

Penny Wong invites you to bring the kids to take part in the annual Turkey Run from Bunch of Grapes Bookstore to Owen Park with oranges, water, and medals at the end. Yes, this year a turkey will be running as well. Cost is $5 per child and benefits the Grace Church Preschool’s enrichment program. The Turkey Run is not this Saturday but next week, November 22, at 9 am.

Seniors! Do you have an unusual holiday sweater?  Bring it to show at the Tisbury Senior Center next Monday.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Katie Davey. Happy birthday to Rebecca Gonsalves on Sunday. Wish the best on Wednesday to Island artist Nancy Furino.
