Vineyard Tennis Center hosted 19th Annual Turkey Open Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament

The Vineyard Tennis Center hosted the 19th Annual Turkey Open Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament last weekend. Over 40 players participated in the fundraiser for Doctors Without Borders. Skip Dostal and Paula Rego were the champions in the Gravy draw using effective lobs and steady groundstrokes to outlast Doug Korell and Julie Lively, 6-4, 6-1. They beat Paul Ulyatt and Michelle Bettencourt, 6-2, 7-6 ,7-5, in their most challenging round, the semi-finals.

A new pairing in the mixed competition, Korell and Lively beat Penny and Gavin Franklin 7-5, 6-3. Susie and Shawn Schofield took the honors and the turkey in the Giblets draw. They beat familiar opponents Marilda and Todd Hollister, 7-5, 6-1. The Schofields come through in the semis over Leo McHugh and Katie Upsom, 6-1, 6-3. Roger and Sharon Spinney lost in the semis to the Hollisters, 6-3, 6-3. In the Gravy consolation draw Tjark Aldeborgh and June Flake remained poised to take control of the match and outlast Tammy King and Chuck Scott. The finals of the Giblets consolation draw saw newcomer Kye Howell and Susan Staudt put up a fight against veterans Loni Goldthrope and John Cahill who claimed the prize, 6-1, 6-1. In January, the club will host the Winter Classic Mixed Doubles Tournament to benefit the Island Food Pantry.
