The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank reminds dog walkers and hikers that more than a dozen of its properties are closed to the general public during the two-week deer shotgun season that begins Monday, December 1, and ends Saturday, December 13, when they are open only to deer hunters with special Land Bank permits.
Deer hunting is an effective means to control the population of deer, which are blamed for a growing incidence of tick-borne diseases, according to state wildlife biologists.
Popular properties that will be closed include Gay Head Moraine in Aquinnah, Peaked Hill Reservation and Waskosim’s Rock Reservation in Chilmark, Sepiessa Point Reservation in West Tisbury and Wapatequa Woods North in Oak Bluffs.
