The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys swim team won its first meet of the year on Monday, Jan. 5, by defeating Pope John Paul High School of Hyannis, 57-25. The Vineyard also swam against Nauset in the tri-meet, losing 45-37. The Martha’s Vineyard girls lost to both Pope John Paul (57-24) and Nauset (63-19).

The boys victory was highlighted by first-place finishes by Patrick Best (50 yard freestyle), Evan Sauter (100m backstroke) and the combined efforts of Evan Sauter, Nevin Wallis, Tucker Cosgrove, and Harrison Dorr in the 400m freestyle relay. The 400m freestyle relay, the last event of the meet, was an extremely close race, with the Vineyarders winning by half a second. Harrison Dorr anchored the relay, and held off Nauset by swimming his leg in 59.68 seconds.

The Vineyarders have their first home meet Tuesday, Jan. 13, vs. Sandwich at 3 pm at the Vineyard YMCA pool. This meet was rescheduled from Sandwich due to ongoing pool repairs. The Vineyard team will host Nantucket on Saturday, Jan. 17.
