The Martha’s Vineyard swim team participated in the Boys and Girls South/Central Sectional Championships on Feb. 7 and 8. Only individuals and relays that achieved specific times were eligible to compete.
On Saturday, Patrick Best represented the boys, and swam a school record 52.45 in the 100 free, good for 20th place. In the 50 free, he placed 33rd with a time of 24.09. The meet took place at Boston University, with Framingham taking the boys title. The highest Bay Colony Conference (BCC) finisher was Bridgewater in 13th.
On Sunday, at the girls meet at Wellesley College, Lia Potter beat her by best time by more than 2 seconds in the 100 fly, finishing in 19th place with a time of 1:05.17. Her time qualified her for the state meet on Saturday, Feb. 14, at MIT. Renee Goodale, who has already qualified for the state meet in her two events, finished 23rd in the 200 individual medley (2:27.64), and 21st in the 100 breast (1:15.92). The 400 free relay team (co-captain Galya Walt swimming her last high school race, Kate Hansen, Lia and Renee) finished off the meet by beating their own school record by more than 4 seconds (set a week earlier at the BCC Championships), finishing 28th in 4:09.62. Duxbury won the girls championship, with Nantucket the highest BCC finisher in eighth place.
