To the Editor:
Edgartown and Oak Bluffs EMTs, and Edgartown DPW, please forgive the delay in sending our heartfelt thanks and gratitude. During the late afternoon of the Juno blizzard (Jan. 27), my husband fell in our bathroom. As he was just recovering from his first knee-replacement surgery and was running a high fever, I chose to call 911, and our neighbor Rob Young (a former EMT). While the town of Edgartown sent a front loader to clear our private road and driveway so the ambulance could get to us, Rob took care of my husband and monitored his condition.
Ultimately he was treated and sent home from the hospital, and recovered in time for his second knee replacement. We are so fortunate to have such trained and dedicated EMTs and emergency response personnel. A special shout-out to Kara Shemeth (the only one whose name I knew!), a former student and wonderful, calming person. And we are especially grateful for our neighbor Rob, and our friend Alice Jenkins, who was in our home at the time, for their assistance.
