Do I dare say that spring is almost here? At least that is what the calendar says. It is starting to look and sound that way, as the birds are starting to timidly sing some of their spring sounds, and in between very brief snow showers, the grass is starting to show some green. The activity around town is also increasing, as people are starting to return from their warmer winter quarters.

The public is invited to a candidate forum for the town of Oak Bluffs on Wednesday, March 25, at 7 pm at the Oak Bluffs library, sponsored by the League of Women Voters. There are several contested races, including for selectman. This forum will offer an opportunity to hear from the candidates and to ask them questions on topics of interest to you. Be sure to attend, and bring your friends.

The Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse will be showing a 1964 movie, The Night of the Iguana, on March 23 at 7:30 pm. This is a story of a defrocked Episcopal minister who, while leading a tour group of Baptist schoolteachers, has a nervous breakdown in the Mexican jungle hotel of an old friend. It’s one of the best screen adaptations of Tennessee Williams’ work, and you will surely admire the film.

Calling all ages to the Oak Bluffs library: For the youngsters there is the Teddy Bear Tea Party on Saturday, March 21, from 10 am to 12 noon. Bring your bear and enjoy teatime. Then adults might be interested in a healthy cooking demonstration, also on Saturday at 1 pm. “Eating Well by Color” with Jenn Chang of Martha’s Vineyard Partnership for Health is a “Fit in ’15” program.

Also at the library: the Oak Bluffs Writers Group on March 19 from 10 am to noon, and Scrabble and chess on March 21 from 10 am to noon.

The Oak Bluffs School first grade is holding a movie fundraiser. At 2 pm on Sunday, March 22, at the school cafeteria, The Lego Movie will be shown. The cost is $4 for kids, with no charge for adults. There will also be a bake sale, and all proceeds from the film and bake sale go toward saving the Gay Head Lighthouse. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Spring is here, and you know what that means. It is the start of Martha’s Vineyard Little League tryouts. You may get info about signing up online at MVLittleLeague.org. This is for boys and girls, and includes T-Ball, Farm League, Minor League, Major League, and Babe Ruth.

Here is a new program at the Oak Bluffs Senior Center: UFOs — no, not your usual UFOs, but Unfinished Objects. Bring any projects you have never completed, and join with others at 1 pm on Fridays while you all work on your UFOs and enjoy company and conversation. Also at 1 pm on Fridays will be the Senior Oak Bluffs Police Academy. You will be given a lot of valuable information at this academy.
