Entering week five in the Gateway Babe Ruth League, Vineyard Black (VB) and Vineyard Gray (VG) sit tied atop the Central Division with identical 6-2 records. The two will face-off in at the Vineyard baseball park this Saturday, May 23.

Four weeks into the season, the two Island teams played in alternating double headers against the Sandwich Anglers and Sandwich Storm. On Saturday, Vineyard Black beat the Anglers 8-6. Kenny Hatt and Hollis Kelly each had two hits and two runs batted in for the Vineyard while Kelly pitched five innings, limiting the Anglers to just five hits. In game two, VB ran away from the Storm by a score of 22-3. Mike Habekost and Owen Bresnick combined for six hits and Sam Cranston added four RBIs, while Habekost picked up the victory on the mound.

On Sunday, an undermanned Vineyard Gray found themselves trailing the Storm 11-4 by the top of the sixth inning. Rallies in each of the last two innings lead to a walk-off 12-11 Vineyard victory. Jack Sierputoski led the charge with four hits, including two deep doubles, while Nick Bischoff, Jared Regan and Jeremy Regan each added  two hits. In Game two, VG jumped out to a quick 7-0 first inning lead against the Anglers and never looked back, winning by a final score of 14-4. Jack had another big game with three hits and five runs batted in. Joe Serpa and Benny Binder each contributed three hits while Mike O’Brien added two timely run producing singles. Pitcher Harold Lawry survived a four run second inning to go the distance for his second victory of the year.
